Celebrating the Work of Farmers – Farmer’s Day | UFA

Celebrating For Farmers

Farmers' Day is held annually on the second Friday in June - this year on June 13 - as a tribute to the essential role of farmers and ranchers in our food system and rural communities.

UFA has proudly celebrated Farmers' Day since 1945, standing beside the people who keep agriculture strong. As one of Canada's largest agricultural co-operatives, we advocate for over 127,000 members, ensuring your voice is heard in legislation, policy, and funding decisions that impact your livelihood.

UFA's advocacy efforts include:

  • Representing producers in key government discussions
  • Raising awareness about the importance of agriculture
  • Partnering on programs that support the future of farming

Because everything we do is for farmers.

Over 100 Years of Celebration – For Farmers

Farmers' Day has deep roots in Alberta history, going back to UFA Sunday in 1914, when communities gathered for church services, picnic lunches, and local events. Here's a quick timeline:

  • 1914: First U.F.A. Sunday held near Carbon, AB
  • 1945: UFA Co-operative begins annual Farmers' Day recognition
  • 1975: Farmers' Day officially becomes a school holiday in Alberta
  • 2010: UFA revives in-store celebrations across Alberta
  • Today: The tradition continues with BBQs, games, and provincial landmark light-ups in UFA colours, including the Calgary Tower and Alberta Legislature

More than a century later, the heart of this day remains the same - for farmers, always.
